The direct answer
Schema markup is structured data — code added to a webpage (usually in JSON-LD format) that explicitly labels what the content is: this is an Organization, this is a Service, this is an FAQ, this is a NewsArticle with this author and publish date. It doesn't change how the page looks to a visitor; it changes how clearly a search engine or AI system can understand the page's content and context.
It matters for AI search specifically because AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews build their answers by pulling and synthesizing information from many pages — and structured, unambiguous data is far easier and safer for an AI system to cite confidently than unstructured text it has to interpret.
Why AI engines prefer structured data over plain text
When an AI system reads a page without schema markup, it has to infer what the page is about, who wrote it, whether it's current, and whether it's authoritative — all from context clues in plain text. That inference process is unreliable, and AI systems are conservative about citing sources they can't confidently interpret.
Schema markup removes that inference step entirely. An FAQ marked up with FAQ schema tells the AI system exactly which text is a question and which is its answer. A Service page marked with Service schema tells it exactly what's being offered, by whom, and where. This precision is a large part of why some sites get cited constantly by AI engines and comparable sites never do.
The schema types that matter most for a business website
For most Nigerian business websites, the highest-value schema types are Organization (establishes who you are, your logo, your social profiles), LocalBusiness (location, service area, contact details), Service (what you offer, specifically), FAQPage (direct question-and-answer pairs), and Article or NewsArticle for blog and news content.
Each of these gives an AI system a clean, structured fact it can pull directly into an answer — which is exactly what happens when someone asks an AI assistant 'who's a good web developer in Lagos' and it names a specific business by pulling structured Organization and Service data rather than guessing from marketing copy.
- Organization schema — establishes identity and credibility
- LocalBusiness schema — location and service area
- Service schema — exactly what you offer
- FAQPage schema — direct question-answer pairs AI can quote
- Article/NewsArticle schema — author, date, and content type for editorial content
Why this is easy to skip and expensive to skip
Because schema markup doesn't change anything a visitor can see, it's routinely deprioritized by developers who are optimizing for what a client will notice at handover. But it's precisely because it's invisible that it's so commonly missing — and its absence is a real, measurable cost in AI-search visibility that most business owners don't discover until they ask an AI assistant about their own industry and don't see themselves mentioned.
Adding it properly isn't a large engineering lift on an existing site — it's a matter of prioritizing it, which is exactly why it's worth confirming explicitly with any developer before a project starts.
